My pregnant wife Kate and I were crammed into our NYC apartment elevator with ten masked Chinese strangers.

Even though we lived in the country, many of our neighbors still tried to form an HOA to shut us down — though I guess our pig did get loose that one time...

And it wasn't long before we realized that the whole idea of “self-reliance” is a myth anyway.

Maybe you can raise chickens and grow tomatoes, but you can't repair a diesel engine. Maybe you're great at medicine, but you couldn't fire a gun if your life depended on it. You can stock up on all the best gear, but sooner or later it's going to break. And then what?
